The Metals We Seek

From batteries and wind turbines to steel and electronics, the energy transition runs on metals South Africa can supply.

Critical

Critical & Battery Metals

The metals in high-strength steel, electronics and energy storage, which the world needs far more of.

Strategic

Rare Earth Elements

The elements behind the magnets in electric motors and wind turbines.

Precious

Precious & Industrial

Precious metals and the industrial minerals that modern manufacturing depends on.

our approach

Exploration Done The Right Way

Science First

A collection of mineral specimens
Remote SensingGeologySamplingDrillingSAMREC

Every decision starts with evidence: satellite and radar imagery, the national geological record and careful fieldwork. We test before we claim, and we report what we find to recognised standards.

Communities First

We consult landowners and communities early and openly, through a formal public participation process.

Leave It Better

Light-touch exploration, every disturbance managed and rehabilitated under an approved environmental plan.

Step 01

Read The Ground From Above

Satellite, radar and mineral-mapping imagery, read alongside the national geological record, to rank where to look first.

Step 02

Walk It, Map It, Sample It

Geological mapping, soil and rock sampling with the consent of landowners and communities, tested by accredited laboratories.

Step 03

Drill To Prove It

Targeted drilling on the strongest results, reported openly and to the standards of the SAMREC Code.

Asked Questions

What is a prospecting right?

A prospecting right is granted by the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources under the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act (MPRDA). It allows its holder to explore for specified minerals over a defined area for up to five years, renewable once for up to three more years. It does not allow mining.

What does exploration actually involve?

It happens in stages, and each stage only goes ahead if the previous one justifies it. We start with desk studies and satellite, radar and mineral-mapping imagery. Next comes geological mapping and the collection of soil and rock samples, which accredited laboratories analyse. Where results are strong, we may carry out geophysical surveys and, finally, a limited number of drill holes.

When will work start on the ground?

Only once the required prospecting rights, environmental authorisation and consultation are in place. Nothing happens on anyone’s land before then, and landowners are given proper written notice before any access.

How do you report results?

To the standards of the South African Code for the Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves (the SAMREC Code), signed off by an independent competent person. We do not make claims about results before they have been properly tested.

Does finding minerals mean a mine will follow?

Not necessarily, and usually not. Most exploration projects never become mines, because the deposit is too small, too low-grade or not economic. We will always be clear about what our results do and do not show.

How do you protect the environment?

Every exploration programme is governed by an approved environmental management programme under the National Environmental Management Act. We keep the footprint small, protect water and sensitive areas, and make financial provision, as the law requires, to rehabilitate every site we disturb.
